Richard (Ricky) Flamio Jr., Ph.D.

Principle Investigator

Ricky Flamio, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Dominican University New York. His research integrates comparative genomics, fundamental immunology, and bioinformatics to uncover regulatory mechanisms shaping innate immune responses. He trained at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Hospital for Special Surgery, studying the genetics of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of South Carolina, generating a de novo avian genome assembly and investigating vertebrate chromosome evolution. His work aims to connect evolutionary insights to human immune-mediated kidney diseases.

Jean Franco Del Valle Guerrero is a sophomore at DUNY on the Biology: Pre-PT track. He joined the Flamio Lab in February 2026 to gain experience in bioinformatics with a particular research interest in biomechanics. Jean previously completed a Computational Modeling internship focused on the design of a 3-D Testing Region for proprioception and kinesthesia, with this research culminating in presentation at the 2025 San Diego S-STEM Scholars Conference. He is an Honors student and is continuously named to the Dean's List. On campus, Jean is involved as a Resident Assistant, BLAST Peer Mentor, and Club President. He is also involved in the Student Government Association as the Athletics Senator. Jean is a member of DUNY's NCAA DII Track team. His hobbies include playing the guitar and bass as the President of a band on campus, as well as reading sci-fi and fantasy books.

Annabella Langley is a sophomore at DUNY pursuing a pre-medical track. She joined the Flamio Lab in February 2026 to deepen her understanding of microbiology and immunology through hands-on research. Prior to joining the lab, Annabella completed a research internship in organic chemistry and was named to the Dean’s List in recognition of her academic achievements. She is particularly interested in the intersection of molecular science and clinical medicine. In addition to research, Annabella has worked as a medical assistant in a dermatology office, where she gained valuable patient care experience. Outside of academics, she enjoys drawing, creating art, and exploring the world.

Matthew Orena is a sophomore biology major at Dominican and a member of both the Honors Program and Dean’s List. He joined the Flamio Lab in Feburary 2026 to gain experience in both basic science and translational research, particularly as they relate to immune diseases. He is pursuing a career in medicine as a future Physician Assistant and is passionate about helping others. Matthew is a Certified Phlebotomy Technician and has completed EKG technician training, reflecting his broader interest in clinical science and healthcare. On campus, he serves as the Health & Wellness Senator in the Student Government Association and as a peer mentor in the BLAST biology program. He is the pitcher for the university’s NCAA Division II baseball team.

Alex Sanchez-Sabido is a sophomore at DUNY pursuing a Pre-PA track and is a BLAST scholar. Last year Alex was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta and completed the year on the Dean's list. Alex joined the Flamio Lab in February 2026 to expand his knowledge of microbiology and pursue his passion for research. Prior to the Flamio Lab, Alex attended an Organic Chemistry internship as a freshman. Outside of academics, Alex is a self-employed professional videographer and loves to make music
